Defense wins Championships. We’ve heard it a hundred times. This is what drives Liberos to sacrifice their bodies in hopes to make that big save to keep the rally going. I always put a lot of trust in my libero because their first contact determines the match. Here are some young liberos who are currently rocking their position this club season.

Burley has been a phenomenal 1st contact for years. I remember seeing her as a 14s and being so impressed by her ability to create space between her body and the ball in serve receive. Or the way she reads the attacker and knows exactly where the ball is going even if it bounces off some hands along the way. She just has an extra layer of grit in her play.

NL 16-1 has a very steady feel to it with Kraft in the back row. Add Brynlee Major Brynlee Major 5'9" | OH Lakeville North | 2026 State MN or Clara Keaveny Clara Keaveny 5'10" | DS/L Mayer Lutheran | 2026 State MN as her battery mates and good luck scoring on that squad. Kraft has a great eye for the way a rally is playing out and she plays with the competitive drive that will help you succeed at a high level.

Brundage has made a huge jump in the rankings is spring. She has proven that she can handle some big challenges and I love her movement on both serve receive and defense. Brundage is a scrappy player who carries herself with focus and confidence. She does a great job creating space between her body and her platform and I think her experience this year, competing at a high level will lead to great things this fall.

I like to see how Burns’ serve receive is looking calm and more confident this season. She is showing her versatility playing middle back and left back. Burns does a nice job tracking the ball and gets her hips under a hard-driven swing. She stays alert and ready to make a play on whatever is coming over the net next.

Johnson is fundamentally sound with her passing ability. She tracks the ball and keeps things smooth and simple. Johnson’s got athleticism that help her make some great defensive plays that impact not just a play or two but the entire energy of the match. She reads the play and is quick to the ball without hesitation.
