While I agree that the tools of technology can and do enhance mathematical understanding, for me, there’s still a place for paper and pencil practice. One example of technology enhancing instruction is when students have to identify the polygons created when three dimensional shapes are cut with lines parallel and perpendicular to the base. I had a student who had to figure out the polygons for a hexagonal prism. She couldn’t picture them, so I showed her a picture the prism on Google. That really helped her visualize the prism and identify the polygons created by the parallel and perpendicular cuts. As for paper and pencil form, students need practice with solving equations, writing times facts, and showing how they get their results.

Whiteboard maths excellent for differentiation, and for visual learners. Desmos used for graphing and applets for circle theorems! Maths pad also very useful for geometry. We have recently moved students to iPads which is saving the planet due to way less photo copying but Maths exams are written exams so we still need students to write and show clear working! With iPads they can clear a wrong answer and replace it… not so easy on a script!
