I was home-schooled with my siblings until 7th grade, but my parents used a very hands-off approach. Once we were taught how to read and the basic fundamentals of subjects, we essentially taught ourselves. Read that again. By the 4th grade I was teaching myself subjects. My parents took out on loan the local public school textbooks, and we would use those for part of our curriculum for the year. My parents did not sit down with me and teach me in the way you would expect. Instead, we were expected to teach ourselves, and only went to our parents if we had questions after attempting the lesson and assignment on our own. For example, I was assigned one chapter of math per week. The start of each chapter in the textbook had a description and example of the mathematical principle and concept for the lesson. I would read the description, study the example, and then commence doing the math problems. Once I finished ALL the problems in the chapter (repetition to completion breeds deep learning) one of my parents would check my answers. Any that were wrong I would need to redo, and redo, until they were all correct. In this way I learned at my own pace (more on that in another post), but each week kept progressing along. No matter how long it took, by the end of each week all the problems in each math chapter were completed to 100%, and the concepts firmly solidified in my consciousness. β¨ Would you trust your kids to teach themselves? Why or why not? π Is there a way to apply this method to more traditional classrooms?π‘ How could knowing that kids are capable of learning on their own transform the way you operate your classroom? #lifelonglearning #growthmindset #homeschooling

Maybe instead of always saying three-fourths in the classroom, supplement it with 3- one fourths. Not that three fourths isnβt ok, but by iterating the unit fraction and keeping that grounded, the more that kids can say 3 one-fourths (and recognize that) it not only solidifies the unit fraction it also will connect to multiplicative reasoning! #reachmorestudents#keeplearningkeepgrowing #educationmatters #teacherleadership #learninganddevelopment Pam Harris

It has been 2.5 years since my last Classroom Culture video.... so why not an extra long video. I recently started teaching math, using all of the pedagogy that I have gained. I throw EVERYTHING about traditional teaching into question here: Forget Madeline Hunter, Interactive Notebooks, posting your objectives on the board, tickets out the door. I throw all of it into question. By getting rid of these traditional, status quo practices, I have seen incredible results in learning. Are you tired of always wondering whyyou "think" your students have learned something, but they don'tperform the way you thought they would...... So if you hate 'components of aneffective lesson' as much as I do, here is what to do instead...https://lnkd.in/gRwsdUca

If you see a smudge on a chalkboard β what are you doing? πYou would think that everyone in math class is there to do math, but as Mikie found out, thatβs not necessarily the case. We like Mikieβs story because it highlights the importance of recognizing and accepting differences. By acknowledging that not everyone shares the same priorities, we can foster more inclusive learning environments where everyone feels valued and supported. So, the next time you encounter someone who seems disengaged or distracted in a learning setting, consider that there may be factors at play beyond the subject matter. Embracing diversity in priorities and perspectives not only enriches learning experiences but also promotes empathy, understanding, and collaboration in all aspects of life.Click on the link below to find out what Mikieβs high school classmate did during his math lesson and how it broadened his perspective! A big thanks to him for sharing his story!https://lnkd.in/exRJRGFw#LearningMoments #Room3 #ContentProducers #Education #Doodle #Teaching
