Three days to three weeks #DSGListensI was blessed to become a father over 7 years ago, and yes, the time flys by just like they say. At that time, parental leave for my first and second child was only three days, and I was actually happy with that. Fast forward to the present and I am about to return to work this Monday from having OVER 3 WEEKS OFF for the birth of my son! I cannot stress enough how greatful I am to be able to spend this time with my family. Being able to be there for my wife after birth of our third child, picking up the girls from school, all the memories that have been made over this time…saying thank you isn’t enough. I have worked for #dickssportinggoods for over 20 years now and it’s an honor to work for a company that cares about their employees. Our Annual Pulse Surveys…better believe I would always select parental leave time as something that could change. Over the years, I saw the policy improve to a week, then two weeks, and now to our current policy. I hear my family say this a lot when I talk about #dsg “Dick’s is such a good company to work for, you’re so lucky.” Well, true, but they have one thing off…Dick’s is a good #FAMILY to work for…because that’s what this stuff feels like…my family #dsglife

Welcoming a new child into your life is a significant and exciting time. At Boldyn, as well as full parental leave benefits, we also offer 20 weeks of paid parental leave at 100% of the base salary to both birthing and non-birthing parents. We asked Rebecca Empey, our People Consultant how Boldyn’s parental leave has benefitted her and her family. Rebecca told us that “The policy has given us the ability to focus on what was really important, caring for our new baby and adjusting to our new life as a family without the added financial pressure parental leave can bring. Personally, It meant I could do things to support my mental health during such a time of change (and sometimes chaos!) like baby and fitness classes which wouldn’t be a priority without the enhanced support." “The policies make me feel supported and that Boldyn value me both inside and outside of work. Having a new baby is such a big change and milestone in your life, and my manager and team alongside the business policies have made me feel so supported during what can be a very fulfilling but challenging time of change. The option for a gradual return will also allow for a more smooth return as I adapt back into work when the time comes next month.”We want to support our employees in everyway we can. This week marks the beginning of my 14-month #parentalleave. Yes, you read that right—14 months. That's because I live in Germany, where mothers get fully paid leave from 6 weeks before birth to 8 weeks after. After that, I'll have 10.5 months of partially paid parental leave, while my partner will take 3 months within the next year.As an American, the contrast is stark. The lack of a national U.S. parental leave policy is cruel. There's no guaranteed paid time off for childbirth, which often means working until the day of delivery and facing limited options afterward. Even a "generous" employer parental leave policy offers a maximum of 12 weeks. Attempting to take more can jeopardize job security, accompanied by the stigma of prioritizing family over work.I share this to shed light on what's possible.Today, I recognize my privilege and am immensely grateful for this time to focus on the next chapter of my life: motherhood. But it's not without angst about what a year off will mean for the career I've spent the last 13 years building.Despite the fears and unknowns ahead, I'm reminded of all the incredible women I've worked with in my career. They've shown me that motherhood fosters even more creativity, intuition, hard work, andaboveall, badass-ness.I see it asa sign that becoming a mother will strengthen my spirit and offer a fresh perspective that will undoubtedly inspire my future work.I can't wait to see what the future holds, butfor now,it's time to say goodbye to the working world for the next 14 months ✌️I'm off to savor this time and embrace my soon-to-be new title: Mom.

I recently caught up with a client I’ve been working with since she was expecting her first baby. She has now been back to work for around 8 months. She was excited to share with me that, in her recent performance review, her boss called out that she had planned and executed the best parental leave plan he had ever seen. This achievement played a part in her advancement. Parental leave does not have to feel like a career buzz kill. When approached strategically and intentionally, it can be an opportunity to showcase how you lead through transition. If you are planning a parental leave (or managing someone who is preparing for leave) and would like the support of a Parental Leave Strategy Session, comment or send me a message and we will get this set up for you! #parentalleave #newparents #returntowork #careercoaching #workingparents #womensleadership

Embracing Modern Parental Leave: From a New Dad's Perspective Three weeks into my parental leave at J.P. Morgan, I'm grateful for the support and policies that have transformed how new dads like me experience the transition into fatherhood.Big Change:Thinking back to my parents' time, dads had only a few days for parental leave. Now, thanks to JPM’s more modern approach, I've got a full 16 weeks to be with my family and bond with my daughter, Alice. Soaking It In:These three weeks have been about cherishing every little moment with Alice and Paige Madden. The team's encouragement to take the leave fully has been amazing. It shows how much the TDC team values not just the work we do, but our roles as parents too.Slowing Down:Amid the rush of life, these weeks have reminded me of the magic in slowing down. Every coo, every smile, and even the diaper changes—these are the things that matter. As I continue this journey, I hope more companies adopt these policies, making it easier for all parents to find that work-life balance.#Girldad

Shared parental leave is amazing and here’s why.. I’m roughly at the halfway point through my shared parental leave and just wanted to share a little bit about my experience thus far for anyone thinking about doing it. Firstly, I cannot recommend it enough - the opportunity to spend a solid block of time with my two sons and zero work interruptions or thoughts floating around my head is so incredibly precious. I’ve taken 6 weeks and find myself wishing I did 3, 4, 5x times that - take as much time as you can / what’s fair. 3 days of the week I look after my 10 month old on his own followed by 2 days where I have him and his brother (3 year old) I didn’t get to see or hold my little baby until he was 10 days old due to me being hospitalised - I then faced about 4 months of recovery before I was back to my normal self. I’m using this time to make up as much as possible, having as many cuddles, playtimes and laughs as possible. I’m genuinely having so much fun with both of them - my 3 year old has me in fits of laughter with some of the stuff he comes out with. We play with toys and make up games, watch movies together and laugh at our own farts - a proper trio of silly boys and I love it. So if you’re an expectant parent, please for the love of god talk to your partner and sort out shared parental leave - it’s friggin amazing. Paternity leave for us guys has a long way to go. While I get to enjoy this time with them it’s hard to forget it means my wife missing out. I hope for a future where my two boys can spend 12 months with their children AND partners if they chose to have a family. No one loses when it comes to time spent as a family. #paternity #sharedparentalleave #maternity #family

“This should be required for all managers.”A manager said this to me following a recent coaching session we had in support of a Pathways to Parenthood client (her direct report), who is expecting her first baby. This manager is a very skilled and competent people manager, but had simply never had a team member go on parental leave before and wanted some guidance on how to best support her.Together, we talked about:1️⃣ What she was specifically concerned about in managing this person, and her team, through a parental leave and subsequent return.2️⃣ Generally, what new and expectant parents are navigating as they transition to working parenthood.3️⃣ The roles she can play in supporting employees going on and returning from leave.4️⃣ The unique opportunities that come with a team member going on parental leave.5️⃣ How to use direct communication and open-ended questions to prevent (well-intentioned) misses in the way she and her team support their colleague.6️⃣ Best practices of support for each stage: preparing for leave, on leave, returning to work. One of the many opportunities that come with parental leave is the manager’s ability to collect a new experience that will expand their leadership capabilities, empathy and perspective. If you’re not currently supporting your managers in this way, Pathways to Parenthood would love to help!#parentalleave #returntowork #careercoaching #workingparents
